Lawn

The lawn in the garden it can fulfill multiple roles, but on the plot (300 m²) in the employee's allotment garden, according to the guidelines, its area should not exceed 20 m², and on larger plots – 35 m².

The appearance of the lawn is decisive – in addition to soil conditions, climate and beauty treatments – selection of appropriate species and varieties, depending on the purpose of the lawn and the position. Lawns require deep cultivation before sowing grasses (15-40 cm). It has a positive effect on the soil structure and destroys weeds. Well, e.g.. prepares the soil for the lawn prior to the cultivation of potatoes or legumes. Particular attention should be paid to the thorough weeding of the site, especially from couch grass. For this purpose, we leave the place intended for the lawn not even sown – in the so-called. black fallow. Good surface leveling is also very important. On "new" mixed soils, with an undeveloped soil profile and after reclamation, e.g.. on former construction sites, pre-sowing organic fertilization is highly recommended – compost, manure or well-decomposed peat – in an amount at least 3 kg in 1 m². The quality of the lawn is highly dependent on fertilization. We provide orientation on 10m² 10 day superphosphate, 5 dag of potassium salt, 0,5-2 dag of ground lime (depending on the pH of the soil) i 10-15 dag of saltpetre in 3 or 4 doses. When using animal fertilizers and composts, especially fresh, keep in mind, that they contain a considerable amount of weed seeds. These weeds must be destroyed while tilling the soil after emergence. Sowing grass seeds into freshly fertilized soil may cause weed infestation that is difficult to control. Before sowing, the surface of the cultivated soil must be thoroughly leveled, kneaded with a light roller or patted with a board yes, that the foot in the flat shoes leaves only slight traces. After patting the surface, we even out the resulting unevenness, then rake shallow. We sow grass seeds by hand with the "salting movement."”, by passing the seeds between your fingers and making sure that the seeds are spread evenly. We sow densely by the shore (25-30 g/m²), and approaching the center – less often. It is best to sow in calm weather and moderate air and soil moisture (with excessive humidity, seeds can stick to soles and tools).

The following grass mixtures are usually used for sowing lawns:

  • universal mixture, useful in various conditions – The ryegrass continued in Więcławicka – 40%, Leo red fescue – 30% and Meadow Wiechlina Alicja – 30%;
  • mix for well-prepared positions, less turbulence in the sowing year, resistant to drought and vital throughout the growing season – Leo red fescue – 25%, Sim's threadlike fescue – 20%, Meadow meadow grass Alicja – 25% and Igeka common velvet -30%.

The mixing of the grass seed in the mixture should be done very thoroughly. Also while sowing, mix the seeds frequently by hand. After sowing, we cover the seeds, using light hoeing with an iron rake. When we set up a larger lawn and need to hoe, go to the sown surface, we secure it with boards, so as not to damage the surface prepared for sowing. We can too, instead of hoeing with rakes, cover the sowing with soil or dry peat (in an amount 4-5 kg in 100 m²); these materials are sown through sieves or spread by hand. After sowing the grass, sprinkle the sown area. After emergence of emergence, the lawn should be weeded as needed. The first mowing takes place then, when the grass is approx 10 cm. In sufficiently humid areas, grass can be sown from mid-April to mid-September. Under average conditions, it is best to sow it in April or August – September.

The appearance of the lawn and its durability depend on careful care. The first years are a particularly important period of lawn care (3-5 years), then its species composition is finally established, so the disappearance of some species and the proliferation of others. Lawn care includes the following treatments: mowing, watering, top dressing, weeding and restoration.

The lawn requires frequent watering, especially in times of drought. We water with a hose or better with a portable sprinkler. Strong should not be used, high and flat stream, which washes away the top layer of soil, and in addition, compacts the surface, which affects its crusting. The stream should be fine, sprinkles falling almost vertically. We carry out the first fertilization in the spring, using saltpetre in a dose of up to 20 g/m². It is also good to use potassium salt in an amount 20-30 g / m² and bone meal (10 g/m²), which strengthen the lawn. We use ground lime every few years (30-50 g/m²). Carpet lawns are mowed every 10-14 days.
