January in the garden – Gardener's calendar
At the end of December, we should whitewash the trunks and thick branches of fruit trees with lime. Who didn't, let – enjoying the nice weather – he will do it in the first days of January. Bleaching is intended to protect trees against the formation of scale wounds, which are formed due to the temperature difference between day and night. In the event of thick snow cover and the threat of penetration into the garden by hares or wild rabbits, snow should be removed near the trees, to prevent "climbing” these rodents to the higher parts of trees and damaging the thicker tree crowns. Let's also check, did other rodents hide themselves by the trunks under the snow, which can also cause large losses.
If we store vegetables in mounds or cellars, must be systematically checked and, if necessary, regulated – by adequate ventilation – room temperature, and in the mounds, check the passage of the ventilation ducts left. In case of more severe frosts, cover the mounds with an additional layer of straw, haulm or leaves. In rooms, in which we store vegetables, we sprinkle the drying sand on the piles. You also need to check the health of vegetables and in the event of the first symptoms of rotting, pick them up and change the sand to fresh.
The test should begin at the end of January (in terms of energy and germination capacity) vegetable seeds not used last season.
During this period, in order to get fresh vegetables, we can start driving them. This is especially true of parsley (on parsley), onions (for chives), chives and lettuce chicory.
It is also advisable to check the winter cover of ornamental plants this month, such as roses or mahogany, and checking the cover of perennials. The thickness of the covers should be adapted to the temperatures. You can also start forcing the bulbous plants, such as: tulips, narcissists, hyacinths, crocuses.
